Everett man killed in car vs. bicycle collision near Mattawa

A 62-year-old Everett man was killed Tuesday morning when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle near Mattawa.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office reported that Greg Gelderman was riding a bicycle in the eastbound lane of Road 24-SW just east of State Route 243 when he was struck from behind around 7:20 a.m. by a 2005 Chrysler 300 driven by Juana Hernandez, 38, of Mattawa. Gelderman’s family has been notified, the sheriff’s office said.

An 11-year-old passenger in Hernandez’s car complained of neck pain and was treated. There were no other injuries.

The sheriff’s office said the rising sun interfering with Fernandez’s field of vision appears to have contributed to the collision. Alcohol and drugs were not a factor. All the occupants in Hernandez’s car were wearing their seatbelts, according to the sheriff. No citations or charges are expected.
