Man fatally shoots himself in Arlington after standoff with police

ARLINGTON — A 63-year-old man fatally shot himself Saturday night after SWAT negotiators spent hours trying to talk him out of his home.

The man allegedly shot his wife earlier that evening before retreating into their home on Highway 9 just north of Arlington, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. The 61-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Deputies responded to the call a little after 5 p.m. and the Everett and Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office regional SWAT team was on scene most of the evening trying to get the man to surrender.

At about 11:30 p.m., the man ended the telephone conversation with negotiators, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. Responders heard a single bang from inside the house. The SWAT team used a robot to confirm that the man had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit has started processing the scene.
