Long-term plans will limit left turns on Highway 9

Street Smarts received a question from Roger Ohlsen of Snohomish about whether it was legal for drivers to cross double-yellow lines on Highway 9 to access driveways and businesses, including the stretch between Broadway/Lowell-Larimer and Cathcart Way.

We found our answer to that in the state Driver’s Guide (it’s legal; illegal to pass).

But it raises another good question: Are there any plans to limit left turns in that stretch in the future?

Tom Pearce of the Washington State Department of Transportation responded:

“To address the initial question, yes, it is legal to cross a double yellow line to turn left,” Pearce said. “As far as future limits on left turns along this stretch of SR 9, there is no schedule to complete the section of SR 9 between Broadway/Lowell-Larimer Road and Cathcart Road, but when it is finished, it will be similar to a project completed a couple of years ago in the Clearview area, where left turns now are limited to specific intersections. Drivers will also be able to make U-turns at those locations.

“Funding for design and right-of-way acquisition for this project is available through 2018, but there is no construction funding scheduled at this time,” Pearce said.
