Lynnwood-to-Bellevue I-405 express tolling begins Sept. 27

OLYMPIA — Toll collections will begin Sept. 27 on new express lanes on I-405 between Lynnwood and Bellevue, state transportation officials announced Thursday.

Drivers will get an option to pay a toll to travel at 45 mph or faster on the 17-mile stretch, from I-5 in Lynnwood to Northeast Sixth Street in Bellevue, according to officials.

Tolls will range from 75 cents to $10, rising and falling based on congestion in the express lanes.

Carpoolers won’t have to pay but the rules are going to be different.

To qualify, carpools will require at least three people in weekday commutes from 5-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. Two people qualify as a carpool at all other times including weekends.

Also, carpoolers will be required to have the Good To Go! Flex Pass set to HOV mode to travel for free, otherwise they will get charged.

“This is a major milestone for us, but also a major call to action for drivers, especially carpoolers, to get ready,” Assistant Secretary of Transportation, Craig Stone said in a statement. “We know from experience that some drivers wait until the last minute to prepare, inundating the customer center, so take action now to avoid the lines.”

The $155 million project created two express toll lanes in each direction of I-405 between NE Sixth Street in Bellevue and just south of Highway 522 in Bothell and one between Highway 522 in Bothell and I-5 in Lynnwood.
