PASCO — Verizon Wireless is no longer planning to build an almost 50-foot cellphone tower in Pasco after residents complained about appearances, health concerns and property values.

The Tri-City Herald reports that the city of Pasco was notified that the company decided to withdraw its application for a special permit.

The change comes weeks after residents packed into a Pasco Planning Commission meeting to express their concerns about the wireless antenna.

Officials say Verizon planned to build a single pole as an antenna support structure to help fill a coverage gap near McGee Elementary School.

Pasco has about 20 similar towers and antennas for cell and Wi-Fi service, including on water towers, flag poles, buildings and on schools. Officials say when those sites applied for a permit, the public did not react.
