Small brush fire in Monroe burning near homes, power lines

MONROE — A quarter-acre brush fire here had state officials concerned Sunday as it burned near homes and power lines.

Chris Heidal, of the state Department of Natural Resources, said the homes are not considered threatened by the blaze near the intersection of Old Pipeline and Woods Creek roads.

The state is working to extinguish the blaze from the air with a helicopter, she said.

A helicopter enroute to fight another fire on steep, wooded terrain near index spotted the Monroe blaze Sunday afternoon. State officials estimate the Index fire doubled Saturday night to about two acres.

Firefighters have been trying to put it out since July 28. However, one of the helicopters had to return to Eastern Washington and the other was dispatched to Monroe on Sunday.

More information on the fires was not immediately available Sunday evening. People can call DNR at 360-856-3500 with questions or to report fires.
