Man who drowned in Skykomish River was from Tacoma

MONROE — Officials have identified the man who drowned Saturday near Al Borlin Park.

Raymond C. Meinzer was 59, of Tacoma. His death in the Skykomish River in Monroe was ruled an accident.

Meinzer and six relatives were floating the river on rafts and tubes starting from the Ben Howard boat launch, Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said. He was on one of the tubes. No one in the group was wearing a life jacket.

The victim went missing as the group rounded a curve in the river. Passersby said they saw him struggling to swim and then go under.

His body was recovered about an hour later. Earlier reports that he had jumped from the Lewis Street trestle were wrong, Willis said.
