Man drowns in Skykomish River near Monroe

MONROE — A 59-year-old Tacoma man drowned Saturday evening in the Skykomish River at Monroe.

The man had been seen jumping into the river off the Lewis Street bridge that crosses the river just south of the city, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

When he didn’t come back up to the surface, bystanders called 911. Monroe Police responded at about 9 p.m. to Al Borlin Park, where the man had been swimming with family members, according to the city’s police department.

Divers from the sheriff’s office recovered the man’s body about an hour later.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and identify the man. Monroe Police Department will handle any investigation.
