3-alarm fire destroys Monroe home

MONROE — A three-alarm fire destroyed a home south of Monroe on Wednesday.

The blaze started in a Kia Sorento in a carport and spread to the house and into the nearby brush, Monroe Fire Marshal Mike Fitzgerald said.

The fire was reported just before 4:30 p.m. off of Highway 203, just north of the Snohomish-King county line. It spread into a wildfire stretching about a square acre.

The firefighting was complicated by a lack of access to water, Fitzgerald said.

About 60 firefighters responded from Monroe, Duvall, Snohomish, Sultan, Clearview, Gold Bar, Index, Woodinville, Oso and Stanwood. Crews remained on scene for hours monitoring hot spots in the forest.

“The homeowner was elated that we were able to salvage his laptop which had memorable family photos on it,” Battalion Chief Erik Liddiatt said. “That’s about all we were able to save for this family.”

One firefighter was treated for minor injuries. The loss from the fire, including the two-story house, was estimated at $500,000. The American Red Cross was assisting three people who were displaced.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, Fitzgerald said.
