Total Reclaim now takes expired car seats for recycling

My expired child’s car seat is still sitting in our basement, waiting for some fate other than the landfill (and another layer of dust).

The folks at Old Car Seat, New Life may have come up with an answer.

Total Reclaim in Seattle is now taking child car seats and booster seats for recycling on an ongoing basis, part of a pilot project, according to the recycleyourcarseat.org blog. Total Reclaim worked with the Seattle-based CoolMom group on past collection events.

For $5, you can leave your stripped car seat with the specialty recycler at its facility at 2200 Sixth Ave. S., Seattle. Hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Covers, straps and soft foam must be removed, or expect to pay $2 extra.

While you’re at it, bring other castoffs that Total Reclaim accepts, including televisions, computers, printers, baby monitors and anything with a cord or battery. Find a full list at www.totalreclaim.com.

Why the fee? As we related in a February story, it’s extremely difficult to recycle these high-tech, uber-safe contraptions. “Even a car seat that weighs 15 pounds is only worth $.75 in the recycling market,” writes CoolMom’s Kimberly Christensen.

For a closer option, consider The Recology Store, which is expected to open a Bothell location this month at Canyon Park Place (22833 Bothell-Everett Highway, Suite 111). The cost to recycle a car seat through Recology is $10.
