MUKILTEO — Members of the teachers union here will walk off the job on Wednesday, joining those of other school districts in political action aimed at convincing legislators in Olympia to pay for smaller class sizes at all grade levels and to give teachers raises and better benefits.
Most schools in the Mukilteo School District will be closed on Wednesday, the district said, although some activities will occur as usual.
Classes at the Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center and the Early Childhood Education Assistance Program will occur as usual. Transportation to out-of-district programs also will be available on Wednesday, despite the strike.
The missed day of school will be added to the end of the school year, making the last day of school in Mukilteo Friday, June 12.
The teachers are members of the Mukilteo Education Association. Unionized teachers in many districts statewide have been holding one-day strikes as lawmakers work overtime on a new state budget.
Teachers in Everett also will walk off the job this week, on Friday. Previously, teachers in nine other Snohomish County school districts have held one-day strikes.
Although Everett classes are cancelled on Friday, the school district will serve free lunches for students in need from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in three cafeterias — at Emerson, Hawthorne and Woodside elementary schools.
The strikes are organized by the Washington Education Association of teachers unions as part of a broader lobbying effort that has included a rally in Olympia and media advertising.
