DeVry University to close in Lynnwood this year

LYNNWOOD — DeVry University plans to close its Lynnwood branch at the end of December, one of 14 branches the for-profit college is shutting down nationwide.

More than 500 students attend the campuses at Lynnwood and Federal Way, which is also being closed. The combined branches employ 38 people.

It’s part of a local strategy by the college to shift more students to online only classes, said Susie White, who works for MSL Group, a public relations firm employed by DeVry.

About 50 percent of the students at the two branches takes classes exclusively online and 87 percent take a mix of courses on campus and online, White said.

DeVry opened its Lynnwood branch in 2011 at Red Stone Corporate Center, 19020 33rd Ave. W., Suite 110. The branch offers a mix of undergraduate and graduate level programs.

To shut down its Washington campuses, DeVry still needs to gain approval from the statewide Washington Student Achievement Council and the nationwide Higher Learning Commission, White said.

DeVry is committed to finding options for students, she said. The college will be reaching out to students to schedule individual planning meetings.

DeVry is offering affected students a 20-percent tuition savings on online courses or the same savings if they plan to take classes at another campus. (Lynnwood and Federal Way are the only two in-state DeVry branches.)

The college will also work with students to help them transfer to nearby college or university with comparable programs.
