EVERETT — A housing development proposed next to a former landfill where subterranean fires ran rampant in the 1980s will need more attention from Snohomish County planners before gaining approval.
The 97-home subdivision known as Bakerview is being pursued by P&G East LLC of Kirkland on a 40-acre parcel that includes the dormant landfill.
County hearing examiner Peter Camp on Tuesday granted an appeal brought by neighbors of the former Go-East landfill. Camp’s decision to send the matter back for more study followed seven days of public testimony in January and February.
Camp’s order asks county planners to further study the likely environmental impacts.
It also says the plan to close the former woodwaste landfill is inadequate.
The landfill, on the 4300 block of 108th Street SE outside of Everett city limits, has been a source of anxiety since the 1980s, when underground fires smoldered for years.
Magnesium and old car parts are thought to have contributed to the fires, but no one knows for sure what’s underground.
