His hometown: Likes living in Mukilteo and going to school there. “The community is really supportive. When you think of a town, you think of somewhere that is close knit. I would say that Mukilteo is one of those towns.”
No siblings: Is an only child, which has its pros and cons. Thinks it would be fun to have a brother or sister around sometimes, but “I don’t have to deal with sharing the bathroom and I like that.”
Full load: Is taking seven classes, one more than required. Schedule includes honors English and pre-calculus, college-level advanced placement biology and U.S. history, leadership, Japanese, and debate.
Big plans: Considering a journalism or communications undergraduate degree and law school after that.
Favorite subject: English. Has kept a journal since he was a little kid. “I love to write. I like interpreting. I’m kind of an unconventional thinker.”
Favorite author: It changes, but for now he likes Jack Kerouac, who wrote “On the Road.”
Active in school: Is president of the Japanese club, vice president of human rights club and founded the school’s film society. Also coordinated a recent blood drive with 165 donors, a substantial increase from the previous year. “I love getting involved in school. I like putting my time and effort into projects and watching people benefit from them.”
In the works: Now helping with a campaign to prevent underage drinking and “Project Kamiak,” a student-run fashion show featuring student-made clothes. Says his fashion sense isn’t too bad, but he’ll probably stick with helping coordinate things.
Sake of argument: Enjoys being part of school’s debate program. Favorite moment? He and a partner won a cross-examination policy debate at a University of Oregon tournament last year.
Big screen fan: Loves the cinema, especially films by Alfred Hitchcock and independently made movies. Likes school’s cinema society where, on average, 20 students watch movies after school and critique what they see. “There are always different opinions. Some people love it. Some people hate it. And some people are just indifferent.”
Would love to meet: Of anyone in the world, past and present, he’d most enjoy chatting over lunch with Jean Cocteau, a French film director, poet and novelist, and presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.
Spare time: Has volunteered at Stevens Hospital and is hoping to volunteer at an acupuncture clinic.
