EVERETT — Two people were seen running from a south Everett apartment where a man was fatally shot last week.
Jeffrey J. Wehl, 57, died from a gunshot wound to the head, the Snohomish County medical examiner said Thursday. His death was ruled a homicide.
A tenant of the Candlewood Apartments on W. Casino Road called police Jan. 21 after hearing a gunshot. She also heard what sounded like pounding coming from upstairs, according to a search warrant. She saw a man standing next to an open apartment door and she asked if Wehl was home. The stranger said he wasn’t and then ran off, leaving the door open. A woman was seen running with the man.
The tenant looked into her neighbor’s apartment and saw Wehl wounded on the ground. She called 911 and provided aid to Wehl.
Another witness saw a man fleeing the victim’s apartment. The man got into the back seat of a four-door vehicle, detectives wrote in the warrant.
An Everett officer was able to speak with Wehl briefly before first-aid measures prevented him from talking. He named two people and then told officers the gun was in his apartment. Detectives located a revolver there. They also seized drug paraphernalia, women’s jewelry, candy and condoms in a plastic baggie.
Wehl died Jan. 23.
The man seen running from the apartment is described as about 25 years old, 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds. His race is unknown. He wore a red baseball cap with a black rim and a red-and-black jacket.
The woman is described as white and in her mid-twenties, about 5-foot-5 and 110 pounds, with long hair.
“Detectives have learned that the victim posted ads seeking female roommates and found his profile on several dating websites,” department spokesman Aaron Snell said. “It is possible these played a part in the incident.”
