Prep volleyball: Jackson 3, Mount Vernon 1

EVERETT — Jackson defeated Mount Vernon 3-1 Thursday night in a pivitol Wesco 4A game that had playoff implications hanging in the balance.

Jackson and Mount Vernon were in a three-way tie for third place with Cascade coming into the game, and the Timberwolves’ win — combined with a loss by both Cascade and Mount Vernon — gives Jackson sole possession of third place in the Wesco 4A standings.

“They’ve chosen competeing and being confident,” Jackson head coach Mindy Staudinger said of her squad. “(They’re) working on the things they need to get better at.”

Jackson came out swinging early. “We didn’t have a lot of unforced errors,” Staudinger said. “We did serve very tough today. We had 14 aces and three errors on the night.”

Looking toward the final two games of the season for the Timberwolves, they have it easier than most. Jackson faces off against the bottom two teams in the standings — winless Mariner on Oct. 28 and a 4-7 Monroe team on Oct. 30.

However, Staudinger says that the bottom of the Wesco 4A is nothing to overlook.

“It’s a pretty close group overall, as far as skills and ability, and it’s whether or not you’ll capatalize on that night,” Staudinger said. “You can’t take anyone for granted. Mariner — they dig balls like crazy. Monroe — they’re a good team. We’ve got to be on our A-game.”
