Noted speaker Gil Penalosa will give two speeches in Lynnwood this week to business leaders and the general public aimed at raising awareness about community design.

“When we design our cities around cars, we just get more cars,” says Penalosa, executive director of the Canadian non-profit organization 8-80 Cities, in a statement. “But when we design our cities around people, we get healthier and happier people.

“If everything we did in our public spaces had to be fantastic for the 8 and the 80 year old, we’d probably end up with communities that were good for everybody.”

His first talk, “Creating Vibrant Communities,” will be at an invitation-only luncheon with the presentation beginning at noon today at the Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th Street SW, Lynnwood.

It will be moderated by Bob Drewel, chancellor, Washington State University North Puget Sound at Everett, at 11:45

His second talk is for the general public. It’s called “What Does a Vibrant City of the Future Look Like?” moderated by Josh Brown, executive director, Puget Sound Regional Council. It focuses on what citizens can do to influence city planners to create more livable cities.

The talk is planned from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday at the convention center.

Both presentations will be covered live on Community Transit’s Facebook page and on Twitter using the hashtag #8-80cities.
