EVERETT — The Port of Everett, in partnership with the Department of Ecology, will celebrate the start of the final phase of the Everett Shipyard Cleanup project.

The kick-off event is scheduled at 3 p.m. Thursday near the 14th Street haul-out. The public is invited.

The $6.2 million cleanup is the final piece before the Port can move ahead on the Waterfront Place project, which would bring a mix of commercial and residential space and public open space to the central waterfront.

Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson, Port executive John Mohr and several others plan to talk.

Several festivities are planned to make the event appealing for the community.

The Port is partnering with Imagine Children’s Museum to bring an award-winning sand sculptor to the site to create wildlife and sea creatures in sand as well as an iconic tower to be part of the project.

Part of the sand will be set aside for children who can dig to find treasures and prizes in the sand. Desserts and refreshments will also be provided.

The Port is also holding its annual barbecue for marina tenants from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., musician Clinton Fearon is scheduled to perform in the Music at the Marina series at 1700 W. Marine View Drive
