Darrington hosts fishing derby: The Darrington Volunteer Firefighters Association holds its annual Kids Fishing Derby on the opening day of trout season, 6-11 a.m. Saturday at Fortson Pond No. 2, 9.5 miles east of Oso. Participants this year should be aware of the detour around the Highway 530 mudslide, organizer Brian Mount noted.
Typically about 100 kids take part in the popular derby. The contest is for ages 14 and under. Prizes will be awarded. Kids should bring their own gear. Families can register at the event. There is no entry fee.

Rallies to ‘Stand Against Racism’: The public is invited to Stand Against Racism at a rally set to begin at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the County Plaza Courtyard, at Rockefeller Avenue and Wall Street in downtown Everett.
The annual event is organized by the YWCA of Seattle-King-Snohomish County and Snohomish County Human Services with the goal of bringing people together from all walks of life to raise awareness that racism still exists. The NAACP, YWCA, Human Rights Commission, and the Communities of Color also will be part of the program.
The city of Lynnwood plans its own Stand Against Racism event with the YWCA at 3:30 p.m. at Lynnwood City Hall, 19100 44th Ave. W. More info: 425-258-2766
Telephone town hall: State Rep. Hans Dunshee, D-Snohomish, will discuss the 2014 session and answer questions from constituents in a telephone town hall at 6 p.m. Thursday. It is scheduled to last one hour.
Dunshee represents the 44th Legislative District which includes the cities of Snohomish, Lake Stevens and Mill Creek.
With a telephone town hall, residents in the district will receive an automatically generated telephone call at their homes just before 6 p.m. and invited to stay on the line to participate.
