EVERETT — An Everett man arrested for investigation of a fatal stabbing Monday told police he acted in self defense, according to court papers.
Bail was set at $2 million Tuesday for George B. Bell, 40. A judge found probable cause to hold him after he was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree murder.
The man who died was stabbed about six times, according to court papers. He attempted to intervene in a fight between the suspect and the suspect’s girlfriend, police said.
“The victim stepped in to try to help, and bad things happened,” Everett police Sgt. Ryan Dalberg said.
The incident was reported about 1:45 a.m. Monday at an apartment in the 8200 block of Fifth Avenue W. When officers arrived, a woman was providing first aid to the victim.
Police learned there had been an argument between a couple at the home. Bell had been accused of being unfaithful, court papers said.
An argument escalated. One witness told police that Bell took a swing at the other man, 22, who dodged it. The younger man then landed a punch.
That’s when Bell allegedly left the room, grabbed a kitchen knife and attacked the younger man, who was sitting on a sofa, court papers said.
The younger man received multiple stab wounds to his neck, court papers said.
The suspect ran off but he was tracked down by a police dog on the back patio of a neighboring apartment complex.
He made “several utterances” that it was self defense, court papers said.
