Key football games in 2014-15

The 2014-15 schedules for local football teams were released on Tuesday and there are a number of tantalizing matchups next fall. Here’s a look at some of the best:

Marysville Pilchuck vs. O’Dea

Friday, Sept. 19 at TBD

The Tomahawks, who fell in the first round of state to Eastside Catholic, travel to take on the Irish, who advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament this past season. The subplot of this game is the battle of two of the state’s top running backs in MP’s Austin Joyner and O’Dea’s Myles Gaskin. Made even more interesting is the fact Gaskin recently committed to Washington, which is at odds with Joyner’s recent commitment to Washington State.

Arlington vs. Eastside Catholic

Friday, Sept. 19 at John C. Larson Field

Having traveled north twice to take on Marysville Pilchuck, the Crusaders will head a little further up Highway 9 and take on Arlington in the regular season next year. The Eagles, who are moving down to 3A, host one of the best 3A teams in the state in the Crusaders, who have fallen to Bellevue in the past two state championship games. This will be the first game on Arlington’s new field turf as John C. Larson Field moves away from natural grass.

Lake Stevens vs. Meadowdale

Friday, Sept. 5 at LSHS Football Field

The season gets off with a bang as one of the early favorites in the 4A take on one of 3A’s strongest teams in the Mavericks. Meadowdale, which advanced to the quarterfinals this past season, will have to figure out how to stop prolific passer Jacob Eason, who was recently offered a scholarship from the defending national champs, Florida State..

Glacier Peak vs. Bellevue

Friday, Oct. 3 at Bellevue H.S.

The Grizzlies, who have fallen to the Wolverines twice in the state tournament in the past five years, get Bellevue, winners of seven straight state titles, in the regular season this time around.

Archbishop Murphy vs. Cedar Park Christian-Bothell

Friday, Oct. 17 at Terry Ennis Stadium

The Wildcats host the newest Cascade Conference team in the Eagles, who are also coached by former Murphy coach Bill Marsh.

Lakewood vs. Lynden

Friday, Sept. 12 at Lakewood H.S.

The Cougars host the four-time state champs in a battle of 2A heavyweights.
