ARLINGTON — The Arlington softball team scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to rally past Lynnwood and earn a 5-4 victory on Monday in a Wesco 4A crossover game.
With one out, Arlington senior Katelynn Kazen successfully executed a safety squeeze bunt to score Jennifer Kellogg from third base with the winning run.
“She’s our best bunter,” Eagles head coach Dan Eng said about Kazen. “I called the safety squeeze right off the bat … figured that they wanted to get ahead (in the count). The pitch was right on the outside corner and it was bunted perfectly up the first-base line.”
The Eagles’ Katelyn McDonald hit four doubles, with her last one coming to lead off the seventh. Kellogg then tripled to drive in McDonald and tie the game.
Desiree Graham led the Royals, batting 3-for-4 with a double. Lynnwood took advantage of some early-inning jitters from Eagles starter Madeline Maclean. The Royals loaded the bases in the first before Maclean escaped without allowing a run. But Lynnwood broke through with all four of its runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead.
“It was like a merry-go-round (in the second),” Eng said. “Maclean was kind of nervous. She knew Lynnwood is a good team and it took her until almost until the end of the third/beginning of the fourth to settle. But she made pitches when it counted.”
