Edmonds Arts Festival poster winner

This year’s Edmonds Arts Festival Student Art Poster winner is Julian Gray, a second-grade student at Sherwood Elementary School.

Julian’s watercolor piece, “Flower Meadow,” will be on sale at the Festival Store.

He will receive a $150 honorarium from the Edmonds Arts Festival.

The festival is slated for June 17-19.

When asked for his definition of “art,” Julian said: “It’s where you can be creative and do stuff you like and that impresses you.”

Senior volunteers recognized

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Snohomish County celebrated its volunteers May 25 at the Legion Memorial golf course clubhouse. RSVP, sponsored by Catholic Community Services, matches people age 55 and older with volunteer opportunities in their communities.

Four volunteers received the President’s “Call to Service” Lifetime Service Award, given to those volunteers with more than 4,000 hours of documented service. The recipients were Maria Leticia “Lett” Florendo, of Marysville, Bobby Neason, of Everett, Anne Peterson, of Brier, and Larry Wewel, of Everett.

Last year, 795 RSVP volunteers served more than 145,000 hours in support of 82 nonprofits in Snohomish County.

Horse Bowl champions head to Kentucky

Both Snohomish County-based teams took the championship at the State Horse Bowl Competition, held May 7 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. The senior team will go on to represent Washington at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup, Nov. 4-6 in Louisville, Kentucky.

The senior team members are Hallie Burkenpas (Monroe), Lillianna Andrews (Arlington), Shelby Nelson (Snohomish), Tenley Mange (Bellevue) and Nicole Gallagher (Brier).

The intermediate team members were Forest Cook (Stanwood), Lily Nebeker (Redmond), Sara Wohlleben (Arlington), Allison Bircher (Redmond) and Chloe Gehrman (Camano Island).

The 4-H Horse Bowl is a quiz contest on horse topics.

Meadowdale grad in FEMA Corps

Meadowdale High School graduate Evan Primm recently began a 10-month term of national service in FEMA Corps, an AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps program. FEMA Corps provides a boost to the nation’s ability to assist disaster survivors while expanding career opportunities for young people ages 18 to 24.

During his term of service, Primm, 22, will assist communities that have been impacted by disasters, as well as provide administrative and logistical support to the nation’s emergency management system.

Kamiak senior a film festival winner

Kamiak High School senior Danica Studioso won the top award in the Public Service Announcement (PSA)/Anti-Ad category at the Northwest High School Film Festival, held May 17 at the Cinerama Theater in Seattle. The contest, which featured over 200 entries from throughout the Puget Sound area, was judged by local film professionals and college professors. Next year, Studioso plans to continue film studies in Pasadena, California.

Student editorial published by Times

Miriam Gold, a sophomore at Edmonds-Woodway High School, received third place in The New York Times’ annual Student Editorial Contest with her piece, “It’s Time for Teens to Vote.”

More than 6,300 editorials were submitted from around the world.

Camano Library earns accolades

The AIA Northwest Washington chapter of the American Institute of Architects gave a Citation Award to the designers, architects and construction contractors who transformed a former restaurant into the Camano Library.

Honored were architect Dan Nelson of Stanwood-based Designs Northwest, Stig Carlson of Stig Carlson Architecture in Coupeville, general contractor Kirtley Cole Construction of Everett, and Sno-Isle Libraries.

Camano Library opened in August at its permanent home at Terry’s Corner in Camano Commons. The site was the former home of Islanders Restaurant.
