Whew! How exciting was that? Unfortunately for the Silvertips excitement was all they got out of Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime loss to Prince George in Game 4. It was back-and-forth action with both teams seeming to be in control only for the momentum to swing. But Nick Drazenovic’s winner 5:18 into overtime knotted the best-of-seven series at 2-2.
Some thoughts:
– The third period was about as exciting a period of hockey as I’ve seen all season long. Not only did Everett battle back from a 2-1 deficit to take the lead, and not only did the Cougars fight right back, both teams had several other golden scoring chances. With whistles few and far between and the action fast and furious up and down the ice, there weren’t many opportunities to take a breath.
– I was feeling a strong sense of deja vu early in overtime when Everett’s Jesse Smyke again split the Prince George defense for a breakaway. Apparently two breakaway overtime winners in one series by a member of the “Joes” line was too much for the hockey gods to allow.
– Speaking of deja vu, didn’t we already see this script in the first round? Two wins by Everett at home to open the series, two losses on the road to make it 2-2. However, I’d have to say the Cougars look far more dangerous than Spokane did.
– Prince George goaltender Real Cyr is playing better than Everett’s Leland Irving. Irving isn’t playing bad, but Cyr’s been the absolute definition of solid.
– Prince George’s win means the series will go at least six games. That’s at least two more 11-hour bus rides between Everett and Prince George. You’ve got to think that’s an advantage for the Cougars, who from their remote location are more accustomed to the long bus rides than Everett.
