Alex Stamey had been chasing history for five years before finally catching up last spring.
A resident of Mill Creek, Stamey won his fifth Snohomish County Amateur golf championship in May, a victory that tied him with Bob Whisman for the most tournament titles in history.
Stamey, a finalist for The Herald’s 2013 Man of the Year in Sports award, pulled ahead on the back nine with birdies on the 11th, 12th and 14th holes, and then held on down the stretch on for a one-stroke victory over Brycen Finnie of Mukilteo at Everett Golf and Country Club.
The first-place finish, which came after Stamey posted a closing-round score of 2-under-par 70 at Everett G&CC — giving him a 54-hole total of 2-under 214 — followed previous tournament victories by Stamey in 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2008.
Stamey, who turned 50 over the summer, is expected to try for his sixth County Am championship when the tournament returns for its 84th year over the Memorial Day weekend.
“Maybe I’ve got another one in me,” Stamey, an Everett G&CC member, said after last year’s win. “I turn 50 this summer and who knows. I can still play for another five or six or seven years … so maybe I can be the all-time guy. I’d love to do it and I’m certainly going to try.”
