CAMANO ISLAND — A new Baptist church is expected to begin serving Stanwood and Camano Island in the coming weeks.
The church, which doesn’t have its official name yet, is an offshoot of the Oso Chapel, said the Rev. Gary Ray. Renovations now are under way at the site at 788 Smith Road, south of Highway 532.
The five-acre property was on the market for a number of years, Ray said. Church members hope to eventually offer Sunday services, free Internet, a family-friendly community library and programs for women and young people. Outdoor fields will be chalked for baseball and soccer. There’s also a basketball court.
A community open house and dinner event is set for 6:30 p.m. March 29.
Another community open house and breakfast is set for 8:30 to 10 a.m. April 6.
The first Sunday service is planned for Easter Sunday on April 20. Brunch will be at 11:30 a.m., with the service to follow.
People who are interested in getting involved with the church should contact 360-862-3550 or CamanoChurch@gmail.com.
