Sultan, Mukilteo schools improve efficiency

The Mukilteo and Sultan school districts secured state grant money to make upgrades that should make school buildings more energy efficient.
The Mukilteo School District received a $532,711 grant, which will help pay for a $1.6 million project to replace dated infrastructure, improve lighting and reduce energy costs. The remaining portion of the project will be paid for by utility rebates and capital levy money.
“It’s a good deal as far as the district is concerned,” said Andy Muntz, manager of communications for the Mukilteo School District. “Anything we can do to save costs in energy goes back into the classroom,” he said.
The money will go toward a long list of projects at virtually every school in the district. The upgrades include adding new boilers, installing LED pole-mounted light fixtures at parking lots and retrofitting sinks with low-flow aerators.
The district expects to save $64,000 annually in utility costs, Muntz said.
Sultan School District received $327,269 in state grant money. The money will be used to update heating, ventilation and air conditioning in school buildings, said Dan Chaplik, school superintendent. The project is expected to save the district $37,000 annually in utility costs.
Sultan and Mukilteo were among 21 school districts statewide to receive grants for school facility energy efficiency improvements. The grants were part of $14.9 million awarded by the state, part of a larger pot of $40 million set aside for energy efficiency grants in K-12 schools.
McKinstry, a leader in construction, energy and facility services, helped coordinate the installation work.
