EVERETT — Western Washington Medical Group announced the Jan. 1 retirement of group founder Dr. Ignatius Marsidi from the department of gastroenterology.
Marsidi came to Everett in July 1980 and established his gastroenterology practice. He introduced himself to medical providers all over the region, slowly building his practice. He started in a rented an office on Colby Avenue in Everett as a solo practitioner, on call around the clock for three years, until he was joined by Dr. Jerome Waldbaum in 1983. Marsidi and Waldbaum had a "have scope, will travel" work ethic and saw patients in Monroe and Arlington with their scope equipment and an assistant.
In 1992, after attending a conference, Marsidi decided that with the advent of managed care, primary care physicians in the region would need some support. He met with other specialists in the area and began to create a specialty medical group. On Jan. 1, 1994, four groups of specialists (gastroenterology, general surgery, cardiology and hematology-oncology) opened their doors under the banner of Western Washington Medical Group. WWMG has now grown to a group that has 17 specialties and four family practice groups with locations and satellites in Arlington, Whidbey Island, Lynnwood, Monroe and Bothell.
The gastroenterology department has grown. It opened its own freestanding endoscopy center in July 1995, and after several clinic moves, the department main office is now located at 4225 Hoyt Ave., Suite A, in Everett.
Marsidi is a colorful character who will be missed by his Western Washington Medical Group colleagues, patients and other providers, nurses and administrators in the area.
"I feel so very fortunate to have shared the last 30 years with Ignatius," Waldbaum said. "He is beloved by all that know him for his wit, his wisdom and his sincere dedication to those seeking his care."
