Why the road to a popular Everett park remains closed
One of Everett's most popular parks, Howarth Park, has had its main access road closed off the past few months. The park, located on Olympic Boulevard, is one of the few places the public can access the beach in Everett.
More information about that closure surfaced at the Wednesday night City Council meeting in the midst of a budget discussion. The hillside beside the road that runs to the park is slowly sliding and city workers have blocked off vehicle access to the lower level of the park, said city chief financial officer Debra Bryant.
The city's administration is proposing setting aside $4 million to deal with potential liability at that site along with slides near Lowell and the Stratton Hill neighborhoods. The city spent $5 million less than budgeted last year and the money for a fix would come from those savings.
