3,097 acres added to conservation area

OLYMPIA -- The state is adding 3,097 acres of forest to its Morning Star Natural Resources Conservation Area.
The state Board of Natural Resources voted Friday to approve the transfer of the land from its Common School Trust. That action increases the size of the conservation area to nearly 30,000 acres. The added land is next to Spada Reservoir, about 25 miles east of Everett.
The state plans to compensate its Common School Trust for the estimated $14.8 million worth of timber on the land, money earmarked for public school construction statewide. The state plans to buy more forestland equivalent in value to the $3.5 million appraisal for the transferred property.
