Helen Thayer, at age 63, and her husband Bill, 74, walked almost 1,600 miles west to east across the Gobi Desert in Mongolia.

She is scheduled to speak about the 2001 journey from 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 21 at Marysville City Hall, 1049 State Ave.

Thayer will sign her book, "Walking the Gobi," at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $15 and registration is required.

Speak up on violence: The Domestic Violence Coalition is scheduled to host a community meeting to gather input on how to use a grant to address violence against women.

The grant is designed to support victim services and strengthen police and prosecution responses to cases involving violence against women.

The meeting is planned for 10 a.m. Sept. 9 at the Everett Police Department's south precinct, 1121 SE Everett Mall Way. Call Everett police Lt. Jerry Strieck, 425-257-7410 for more information.



Volunteer opportunity: Equestrian Crossings, a nonprofit program on Whidbey Island that provides horsemanship activities, is seeking volunteers age 10 and older to help with lessons.

Training sessions will be offered from noon to 3 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 6 in Oak Harbor; from noon to 3 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 8 in Greenbank and from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 in Oak Harbor.
