Two local business leaders to speak at green conference

SEATTLE -- U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., will give opening remarks at the second annual GoGreen Conference in the Conference Center at the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle on April 20.

Two Snohomish County business leaders are featured in panel discussions during the conference.

Steve Klein, general manager of Snohomish County Public Utility District, joins a panel called Green Washington Award Winners: Best Sustainable Business Showcase. Other panelists are Leslie Helm, editor of Seattle Business Magazine; Stephen Grose, administrative director of Virginia Mason Medical Center; and Ruth Johnston, associate vice president of environmental stewardship and sustainability at the University of Washington.

Paul Tower, president of Applied Filter Technology Inc. in Snohomish, will speak on a panel called Regional Sustainable Leaders: Companies Improving Social Justice, Environment and Bottom Line. Other panelists are Phil Bussey, president and CEO of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce; Rob Bernard, chief environmental strategist with Microsoft; and Ben Packard, vice president of global responsibility for Starbucks Coffee Co.

Inslee, who represents the 1st Congressional District, is a native Washingtonian and dedicated advocate for preserving the state's natural resources and environment. During his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, he has actively supported a clean energy economy, protections for national forests and a successful campaign to maintain limits on oil-tanker traffic in Puget Sound.

The conference will offer best practices from Washington state business leaders such as Scott Jenkins, vice president of ballpark operations for the Seattle Mariners.

“Last year, with an average diversion rate of over 70 percent on waste, we saved about $70,000 just by recycling," Jenkins said. "That's a pretty good business case.”

Jenkins will share how today the Mariners have set their sights firmly on reaching over 80 percent for 2011.

GoGreen Seattle is a one-day sustainable business conference taking place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 20 at The Conference Center (LEED certified), owned by the Washington State Convention Center. Full-day registration is $150 for a full-day pass, $125 with the purchase of two or more passes. Special rates are available for students, community partners and nonprofits.
